EDUCATION
The Scott County SWCD sponsors the Scott County Women in Agriculture group. The women raise funds each year to sponsor “Farm Day” held in April of each year. The event averages around 300 3rd graders from Scott County Schools. Students visit stations and learn how agricultural products are grown and how the products relate to them in their every day lives. The group also awards a $500 scholarship each year for a Scott County student who has a family background in agriculture.
The Scott County SWCD hosts Ecology Days each year with partners from NRCS, MO Department of Conservation, and University of Missouri Extension. This event averages 200 5th grades that visit 6 stations located at a Scott County Farm and learn about wildlife, soil conservation, and aquatic life.
Field days are held throughout the year. The Annual Tour of Practices showcases various practices throughout the county. SALT tours are held to educate landowners for practices that are available through SALT. These tours include irrigation practices and pasture management practices.
Pest management workshops are held in January. These workshops are held in partnership with NRCS and University of MO Extension. Landowners who are applying for pest management applications are required by the district to attend when applying for financial assistance.
Scott County offers children in Scott County schools to participate in the annual poster contest. Average participation is around 1000 posters. Kindergarten and 1st graders participate in a coloring sheet contest. 2nd through 8th graders participate in the poster contest. |
