The SWCD will promote all conservation practices that are related to the soil, water, wildlife and erosion control practices, along with providing assistance in the planning and application of these practices, and improve communication and information with all public entities.
By referendum ballot on March 12, 1962, Mississippi County landowners balloted in favor of the Soil and Water Conservation District to be established in Mississippi County.
The District operates under authority of Public Law 46, The Soil Erosion Act of 1935 that was followed in the Missouri Legislature with the Soil District‘s Law, Senate Bill 80 in 1943. The District operates under the supervision of the State Soil and Water districts Commission, which is the agency created to administer the Soil and Water Conservation District law and handle State funds appropriate for this proposes.
The Soil and Water Conservation District is funded by Missouri’s one-tenth-of-one-cent Parks and Soils Sales Tax. Mississippi County receives funds from this tax for administration, technical and management purposes, along with cost-share monies for landowners installing conservation practices.
